Average Salary in the Netherlands
Luis Minvielle
Luis is a writer with over 5 years of experience in B2B software. Even though he has always worked in tech, a sector he regularly publishes about, his initial incursions into writing were, curiously enough, music essays discussing scenes from different parts of the world—most likely to deal with his unfulfilled ambition of becoming a neo-soul crooner.

Compared to the rest of Europe, the Netherlands has one of the top five highest average salaries – moderately higher than the EU average of €28,217 (2023). The gross income (or bruto modaal inkomen) for the Netherlands comes from the latest projection by the Centraal Planbureau (CPB) (Dutch national statistics office).
What is the average salary in Amsterdam?
In the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, people generally receive a higher salary on average due to better job opportunities and the overall higher cost of living. That being said, there are no official estimates on the average salary. According to Payscale, the average salary in Amsterdam is €54,000, ten thousand euros more than the national average. But this estimate is skewed towards full-time professionals.
A local salary aggregator, Werk Zoeken, estimates that the average salary in Amsterdam is actually slightly lower than the national average, at €41,664 per year or €3,472 per month.
What is the minimum wage in the Netherlands?
The Netherlands does enforce a national minimum wage for both adults and youths. In 2024, the minimum wage for anyone from 21 to the state pension age is €13.27 per hour. For youths, the rate is determined by age and ranges from €3.98 at 15 years all the way to €10.62 at 20 years old.
If you are a full-time worker earning minimum wage (over the age of 21) you can earn around per month. There is no fixed daily or monthly minimum, so a full-time worker and their employer must agree on the number of monthly hours worked.
What is a good salary in the Netherlands?
According to people living and working in the Netherlands, €36,000 is considered a livable salary. This works out to 2,223 per month (after tax). You’ll probably be looking at paying around €800 in rent and €1,000 in living expenses. So, you’ll have a few hundred left over for saving and emergency.
A good salary in the Netherlands is going to depend on the city you live, if you have a family, and additional expenses like a car or health problems. A good salary for a single person, living alone, would be around €50,000 per year (or even less if you share an apartment and live outside the city centre).
