The Netherlands Self-Employment Visa provides a pathway for non-EU entrepreneurs to establish and manage their own businesses in the Netherlands, all while living in the country and experiencing everything it offers.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals with a solid business plan and the ambition to contribute to the Dutch economy.

If you dream of running your own company and becoming a part of the thriving Dutch business landscape, the Self-Employment Visa may be the option you've been looking for.

Eligibility criteria for Netherlands’ Self-Employment Visa

The Netherlands Self-Employment Visa uses a points-based system to assess your eligibility, a program laid out by the RVO.

You must score a minimum of 90 points, with at least 30 points in each of the following categories:

  • Personal experience: Your education, entrepreneurial background, and relevant work experience are evaluated. Higher levels of education and extensive experience in your field can earn you more points.
  • Business plan: The quality and viability of your business plan are crucial. It should demonstrate a clear understanding of the market, your product or service, financial projections, and your strategy for success.
  • Added value for the Netherlands: Your business must contribute to the Dutch economy. This can be through innovation, job creation, attracting investments, or other positive impacts.

You can find the complete Dutch scoring system here.

The scoring system doesn't apply if you are a Turkish national or a long-term EU resident in another EU country. It's also a different process if you plan to work in Dutch culture under the OCW.

In addition to the points-based system, you must fulfil other key requirements:

  • You must meet the general visa requirements everyone applying for a Netherlands visa needs to meet, as detailed here.
  • Your business must be an essential interest to the Dutch economy, as outlined. This includes priority sectors such as the creative industry, logistics, agriculture and food, life sciences & health, water, chemicals, and high-tech.
  • You must have all permits and qualifications needed for operating in that industry.
  • You must meet the income requirements, showcasing that you can support yourself while in the Netherlands. This must be aligned with these guidelines, either already or detailed in your business plan.
  • If you're moving as a freelancer, you must already have at least one commission based in the Netherlands.
  • If you're planning to work in healthcare, you must be BIG-registered.

Meeting these criteria showcases your potential to establish a successful and sustainable business in the Netherlands and contribute positively to the Dutch economy.

Duration of the Netherlands Self-Employment Visa

The Netherlands Self-Employment Visa initially grants you a temporary residence permit for two years. This duration provides you with ample time to establish your business, generate income, and demonstrate your contribution to the Dutch economy.

After the initial two-year period, you can apply for an extension of your residence permit, provided you continue to meet the eligibility criteria.

Extensions are typically granted for a maximum of five years, allowing you to further develop your business and solidify your presence in the Netherlands.

If you're looking to move into the country with long-term residency and perhaps even citizenship, then this visa can act as a clear pathway for making that happen if you're a dedicated and successful entrepreneur.
