Income tax in Germany is progressive, meaning the rate increases with income. In 2026, the basic tax-free allowance is set at €12,348. Beyond this amount, the tax rate starts at 14% and increases gradually as income rises, reaching 42% for higher income levels and 45% for very high incomes (above €277,825).

You do not pay a single rate on your entire income — higher rates apply only to the portion of income that falls into higher ranges.

Additionally, Germany uses a tax class (Steuerklasse) system, which determines how much income tax is withheld from your salary based on factors such as marital status and family situation.

On top of income tax, employees in Germany pay social security contributions. In total, these amount to around 20–22% of gross salary, shared roughly equally between the employee and employer. These contributions cover health insurance, pension insurance, unemployment insurance, and long-term care insurance.
