The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa is a temporary residence permit designed for remote workers from outside the EU and EEA. It allows you to live in Cyprus for an initial period of one year while working for an employer or clients based abroad. If you enjoy the island and want to stay longer, you can extend your permit for up to two more years or look into other options like the Cyprus Long-Stay Visa or the EU Blue Card.

The Digital Nomad Visa is part of Cyprus’s broader strategy to attract foreign professionals and strengthen its reputation as a hub for digital services. Cyprus has made itself an attractive place for digital nomads by having a warm climate with a good quality of living, just like Portugal positioned itself as a great nomad destination with those same benefits.

Who can apply for the digital nomad visa in Cyprus?

The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa scheme is open to non-EU and non-EEA nationals who can work remotely through telecommunications technology. To apply, you must either be employed by a company registered abroad for which you can work location-independently, or be self-employed with clients located outside of Cyprus.

Applicants also need to prove a stable monthly net income of at least €3,500 after taxes and contributions. For comparison, this is about 1.7 times higher than the estimated average net monthly salary in Cyprus of €2,100.

Note: The threshold of €3,500 increases by 20% if you bring a spouse or partner, and by 15% for each dependent child.

As of March 2022, only 500 permits can be granted at a time under the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa scheme.

How long is the digital nomad visa valid for?

The initial permit is valid for one year. If you still meet the conditions, you can renew it for up to two more years.

If you spend more than 183 days in Cyprus during a tax year, you may be considered a tax resident of Cyprus, as long as you are not a tax resident in another country.

How to apply for the digital nomad visa in Cyprus

Your application process depends on whether you are entering Cyprus for the first time or already living there under another status:

Step 1 – Enter Cyprus

If you need a visa to enter Cyprus, you should first arrive on a tourist visa. If you are already living in Cyprus under another legal status, you can move directly to the next step.

Step 2 – Submit your application

Within three months of arrival, you must submit your application at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia. This can be done in person or through an authorised representative. If you already hold a residence permit under another status, you can apply for a change of status to a digital nomad permit at the same office.

Your application must include all required documents in certified Greek or English translations; otherwise, it will not be accepted. You will also need to provide biometric data (photograph and fingerprints) and pay the relevant fees.

How long does it take to get a decision?

The examination time for the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa is usually between five and seven weeks.

If your application is approved, you’ll receive a letter with instructions on how to collect your residence permit. If it’s rejected, the authorities will send you a letter explaining the reasons.

Digital nomad visa requirements and documents

Here’s the list of documents you need to prepare for your first application:

  • A valid passport or travel document (valid at least three months beyond the application date)
  • A copy of the passport page showing your last entry into Cyprus
  • For employees: an employment contract with a company abroad of at least the same duration as the requested residence permit, proof the work can be performed remotely, confirmation the employer is not based in Cyprus, and details of the company abroad
  • For the self-employed: contracts with clients abroad of at least the same duration as the requested residence permit and proof the work can be performed remotely
  • Proof of monthly net income of at least €3,500, and six months of bank statements
  • Criminal record certificate from your country of origin or residence
  • Medical test results showing you do not suffer from HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and tuberculosis
  • Certificate of Health Insurance that covers inpatient and outpatient care as well as repatriation
  • Proof of accommodation in Cyprus (rental agreement or property deed, plus a recent utility bill)
  • A signed declaration confirming that you and your family members will not take up work or business activity with Cypriot companies or clients

All documents must be officially translated into Greek or English and properly certified.

The list of documents is quite long, so it's a good idea to work with a relocation expert to improve your chances of approval.

Digital nomad visa fees

The application fees are straightforward. You’ll need to pay:

  • €70 for the issuance or renewal of the residence permit
  • €70 for registration in the Aliens’ Registry (if this is your first application)

Step-by-step: How to get the digital nomad visa in Cyprus

Step #1 – Check your eligibility

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a non-EU/EEA national.
  • Work remotely for an employer or clients outside of Cyprus.
  • Earn at least €3,500 per month after taxes.
  • Prove your work does not involve clients or employers in Cyprus.

Step #2 – Enter Cyprus (if required)

  • Arrive on a tourist visa if your nationality requires it.
  • If you already live in Cyprus under another legal status, move directly to Step #3.

Step #3 – Collect your documents

This includes a valid passport, proof of employment or self-employment abroad, bank statements, health checks, health insurance, and proof of accommodation. All documents must be officially translated into Greek or English.

Step #4 – Submit your application

  • Apply within three months of arrival or as a change of status if already residing in Cyprus
  • Submit in person or through an authorised representative at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia.
  • Pay the relevant fees.
  • Provide biometric data (photograph and fingerprints).

Step #5 – Wait for approval

The examination usually takes five to seven weeks. You will receive a letter with instructions on how to collect your residence permit if approved, or an explanation if rejected.

Step #6 – Collect your residence permit

Follow the instructions from the Migration Department to receive your temporary residence permit, valid for one year.

Step #7 – Include family members (optional)

Your spouse, civil partner, and dependent children can join you. Their permits match the duration of yours. Family members cannot work or provide services to Cypriot clients or employers but can live, study, and access healthcare.

Step #8 – Renew if needed

Submit a renewal application after one year, at least one month before your permit expires.

Can family members join you in Cyprus?

Yes. Your spouse or civil partner and your dependent children can join you under the digital nomad scheme. They will receive their own temporary residence permits, valid for the same duration as yours. The income threshold of €3,500 for the main applicant goes up by 20% if a spouse or partner comes along, and by 15% for each child.

Family members cannot work or carry out business activities in Cyprus, but they can live, study, and access healthcare during their stay. They also need to sign a declaration, along with you, confirming that none of you will provide services to Cypriot employers or clients.

Specific requirements for renewal of the Cyprus digital nomad visa

If you want to extend your stay beyond the first year, you need to apply for renewal at least one month before your permit expires. The application is submitted again at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia and you only pay the €70 residence permit fee. Your biometric data will also be taken again.

The renewal can be granted for up to two more years, as long as you still meet the main conditions. This includes showing a monthly net income of at least €3,500, proof of accommodation, and valid health insurance. You must also show that your work arrangement continues to be with an employer or clients abroad. If your employer or clients have changed since your first application, you’ll need to provide their details and new contracts.

Speak to relocation experts

Cyprus has become an attractive destination for remote workers, much like Spain and Portugal with their own digital nomad visas. But the application process involves strict documentation and official translations, which can feel overwhelming if you’re managing it on your own.

Speaking to relocation experts can help you prepare your paperwork, avoid delays, and settle confidently into life on the island. If you’re considering a longer stay, you might also want to look at other Cyprus residence options, such as a long-term visa or even permanent residence. Good luck!
