Our cloud commerce solution transforms and unifies online and physical operations, multichannel sales, expansion to new locations, global payments, financial solutions, and connection to supplier networks.

Position

Are you actively looking for a new opportunity? Or just checking the market? Well… you might just be in the right place!

We’re looking for a Senior Staff Software Developer to join our team in Auckland. In addition to building reliable systems and easy-to-use interfaces with clean, well-tested code, you will also collaborate closely with peers in technical discussions, code reviews, and architecture decisions, helping to elevate our engineering culture and set a high bar for quality and scalability.

To thrive in this role, you’ll bring strong technical knowledge, a quick ability to learn new technologies, and sharp problem-solving skills. You’ll be an excellent communicator who works well with stakeholders, collaborates effectively across teams, and supports others through mentorship.

What you’ll be doing:

  • 30% - Building stuff: This means coding, code reviews, fixing bugs (i.e. tackling the hard debugging), peer programming, incident response, and reverse-engineering tasks, etc.
  • 30% - Planning/architecture: This means estimating, collaborating with products, establishing MVP
  • 30% - Learning and teaching: This means things like chapter reviews, research and meetups, coaching and mentoring developers to “level up” and become more proficient over time
  • 10% - Enabling: This means things like working on shared libraries, contributing to open source content, defining, documenting and evolving best practices for development in their team’s area of focus

And a little bit of…

  • Contributing as part of the wider team to achieve organisational-wide objectives even if this means doing things that aren’t strictly within the scope of your role.

Your qualification

We're looking for a candidate who has experience with the following:

  • Principal, Staff or tech lead level of experience as a Software Engineer, in fullstack, frontend or backend capacity, including both successes and failures (“scars”), which help you make better decisions
  • Deep understanding of modern web application development, tools and techniques
  • Experience in working on major systems in one or more languages: You have extensive practical experience in either frontend or backend development. If focused on frontend, you’ve worked with modern frameworks to build user interfaces that consume APIs. If focused on the backend, you’ve designed and built RESTful APIs, integrated with data storage layers. Regardless of specialisation, you understand core web concepts like HTTP, security principles, and how frontend and backend systems interact in a full-stack architecture
  • You’ll have had experience of delivering architectural change in one or more large complex systems

We know that people are more than what’s on their CV. If you’re unsure that you have the right profile for the role... hit the ‘Apply’ button and give it a try!

What we offer

You’ll enjoy:

  • Lots of autonomy, flexible work culture with the option of working remotely or from one of our beautiful offices
  • Genuine career growth opportunities within a company that's continuously expanding
  • Make a meaningful impact by helping merchants grow their businesses through creating or improving products and addressing customer feedback
  • Be part of a team large enough for growth yet agile enough for real impact
  • Work on high-traffic products with a global user base
  • Opportunity to work alongside other highly skilled engineers, learn and expand your skill set, forge wonderful relationships and make your mark within the diverse and inclusive Lightspeed culture, a true Canadian tech success story

Plus benefits designed to keep you happy, healthy and fulfilled.

  • Lightspeed share scheme (we are all owners)
  • Unlimited paid time off policy
  • Work remotely from anywhere in the world for up to 60 days per year
  • Flexible working policy
  • Health and wellness benefit of $500 per year
  • Mental health online platform and counselling & coaching services
  • Paid leave and assistance for new parents
  • Free LinkedIn Learning license
  • Paid Volunteer day
  • Premium cover if you sign up for health insurance with Southern Cross
  • Exciting events hosted regularly by our Auckland Culture Club
  • Subsidised public transportation to cover up to 75% of your commuting costs
  • Secure, full-time parking facilities
  • Dog-friendly office environment
  • Enjoy complimentary breakfast and lunch options, along with fresh fruits, snacks, and beverages stocked in the office
  • Newly renovated office space situated in Newmarket (Auckland)

Additional details

Do you need additional support during an interview?

At Lightspeed, we acknowledge that we face the unique challenge of engaging with and hiring diverse talent from marginalised communities with different personal or cultural norms. For many candidates from these underrepresented groups, a job interview can be an extra stressful or challenging experience. Taking this nuanced perspective into consideration,  Lightspeed is pleased to offer Supported Interviews! This means you’re welcome to bring whānau or a support person along with you during any Lightspeed interview (excluding initial recruiter phone call). This ensures you have the best opportunity to display your full range of strengths.

Please note that we ask applicants to disclose any criminal convictions, and we conduct criminal record checks as part of our hiring process for this role.

To all recruitment agencies: Lightspeed does not accept unsolicited agency resumes. If we have not directly engaged your company in writing to supply candidates for a specific vacancy, Lightspeed will not be responsible for any fees related to unsolicited resumes.

Lightspeed is a proud equal opportunity employer and we are committed to creating an inclusive and barrier-free workplace. Lightspeed welcomes and encourages applications from people with disabilities. Accommodations are available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.

Where to from here?
Obviously, this has to be mutually beneficial: we want you to step into a role you love, and we want to offer you a place you’re proud to come to every day. For a glimpse into our world check out our career page here.

Lightspeed is building communities through commerce, and we need people from all backgrounds and lived experiences to do that. We were founded in 2005, in Montreal’s gay village and our original members were all part of the LGBTQ+ community. The ethos of our business has been about inclusion from the very beginning, and we strive to provide a workplace where everyone belongs.
