About Technische Universiteit Delft

Delft University of Technology is built on strong foundations. As creators of the world-famous Dutch waterworks and pioneers in biotech, TU Delft is a top international university combining science, engineering and design. It delivers world class results in education, research and innovation to address challenges in the areas of energy, climate, mobility, health and digital society. For generations, our engineers have proven to be entrepreneurial problem-solvers, both in business and in a social context.

Position

Would you like to leverage your technical expertise to support our rapidly growing AI-HPC community with their world-class research and education? Become an HPC Engineer at TU Delft.

Job description

To resolve societal challenges, such as smart reliable energy grids and precision medicine, research into artificial intelligence is crucial. Our pioneering research and our world-class education depend heavily on our High-Performance Computing capabilities. As an HPC Engineer you’ll support our rapidly growing AI-HPC community of students, researchers and educators by securing the effective day-to-day operation and availability of our clusters.

Your responsibilities range from debugging and resolving user issues, installing, implementing and testing software and updates, and scheduling maintenance. To this end, you’ll work closely with Central ICT and align the work of your users to ensure that downtimes do not affect deadlines and vital experiments. Identifying causes, you’ll translate them into solutions, including rules for users, training needs and, of course, technical solutions, which you’ll document for our knowledge bank. You’ll also train users, and assist them with their questions and the installation and configuration of experiment-specific cluster setups. And becoming an active member of the global HPC community, you’ll be attending seminars and conferences, while continuously growing your knowledge and skills.

As you’ll be part of a start-up team, establishing good relations with your colleagues at Central ICT and the users and engineers across TU Delft will be key to effective communication and user satisfaction. You’ll be working closely with fellow HPC Engineers and a growing team of engineers and researchers from various departments, the DelftBlue supercomputer facility and Central ICT. Working in an academic environment, you’ll get every opportunity to evolve and grow your career. Your colleagues are a vibrant and diverse group of highly-motivated people and we offer you a friendly, supportive environment. We share a drive to continuously improve our HPC capabilities!

Your qualification

  • You hold a BSc or MSc, or have graduate-level ability and experience in computer science or another relevant subject
  • You have in-depth knowledge of the compute-intensive domain
  • You have demonstrable experience with high-performance computing environments, and particularly with Slurm or equivalent
  • You have intimate knowledge of Linux and either have experience of cloud deployment, or are quick to learn
  • You leverage your communication skills to interact with your academic users and create a network that will help you optimise processes
  • You take ownership of your work and your results are reflected in user satisfaction
  • You have a good command of English, as you’ll be working in an internationally diverse community

Additional details

Conditions of employment

  • A salary based on scale 10, ( € 2.960,- € 4.670,- depending on education and work experience) according to the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch
  • Universities, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%
  • The offer contains a temporary appointment with the prospect of permanent
  • An excellent pension scheme via the ABP
  • The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year
  • Discount with health insurers
  • Flexible working week
  • Every year, 232 leave hours (at 38 hours). You can also sell or buy additional leave hours via the individual choice budget
  • Plenty of opportunities for education, training and courses
  • Partially paid parental leave
  • Attention for working healthy and energetically with the vitality program

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
