Resume Preparation

Before you start applying for jobs you should invest time in updating and improving your resume. A well written and concise resume is an essential ingredient of a successful job hunt. Here are just a few ways that you can upgrade your tech resume:

Online presence

  • In your resume, add links to GitHub, Stack Overflow, HackerRank, or any other relevant profiles you may have with quality content. These links will serve as proof of your coding abilities.
  • If you have one, include the URL of your personal website or technical blog.
  • Make sure to include a link to your LinkedIn profile so a recruiter or hiring manager can verify you are who you claim to be.

Work experience

  • Use bullet points to make it easy for recruiters to scan your resume and to quickly see if your qualifications match the role.
  • Make sure you have no more than six bullet points per position. The ideal bullet point length is one line.
  • Start each sentence with a strong action verb: e.g., improved, engineered, automated, reduced, led, developed, etc.
  • Use the past tense when describing previous positions.
  • Focus on your impact and accomplishments, not your responsibilities.
  • Wherever possible, back up your accomplishments with numbers to highlight your ability to deliver results. For example:

Achieved a 20% uplift in conversion rates by implementing social login and profile autofill functionality using OAuth with JavaScript.

Managed and scaled a JRuby ETL application from 20,000 daily jobs to over 75,000 while reducing the size and complexity of the codebase.

Keywords

Incorporate relevant keywords in your resume, especially those listed in the vacancy. This simple method will increase your chances of passing the initial resume screening process.

Tech skills

  • Create a section in your resume that is solely dedicated to your technical skills.
  • Only include skills that are relevant.
  • Do not rate your skill levels! Your potential employer will most likely objectively evaluate your skills during a technical interview or a coding test.
  • Organize your skills into categories that allow for easy scanning. For instance: Programming Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud Computing, etc.
  • Make sure that there are no spelling errors, including incorrect capitalization (Html - HTML, Mongo DB - MongoDB, etc.). Even small typos can make your resume look unprofessional.
