Position
As a Lead AI Engineer, you will research, invent, design, and build novel AI solutions, and train Machine Learning models to address the biggest opportunities in healthcare.
Careers with Optum offer flexible work arrangements and individuals who live and work in the Republic of Ireland will have the opportunity to split their monthly work hours between our Dublin office and telecommuting from a home-based office.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Own the development and delivery of ML solutions as part of a team
- Help internal customers think through and clearly articulate business problems/needs and architect potential ML based solutions
- Facilitate the translation between the business ask and the AI potential to realize tangible solutions
- Partner with project and product managers to design and deliver a solution to meet the business needs
- Where appropriate bring forward independent research to bolster Optum’s IP – via conference papers and/or patent applications
- Lead by example, to develop plans, designs, code, documentation and perform code reviews, testing, debugging
- Contribute to our Optum communities of best practices and promote and mentor junior members in best ML practices
- Produce high quality solutions that are robust, reliable, and scalable
- Approach highly uncertain and ambiguous environments with curiosity and a positive can-do attitude
- Utilize data from disparate data sources and formats to support solution features
- Demonstrate initiative and strong ownership of deliverable

Your qualification
- Proven knowledge & experience of AI/ML model development – academic or industry
- Advanced degree in quantitative field (AI/Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, or related discipline)
- Fluency in Python
- Working knowledge and experience in Deep Learning frameworks (Pytorch, Tensorflow or other)
- Ability to leverage technology (e.g., SQL, Scala) to extract and manipulate large datasets
- Exposure to MLOps concepts and understanding of how to develop repeatable/automated data pipelines for automatic model retraining
- Strong software design and architecture skills with an eye towards avoiding and reducing technical debt
Will be a plus
- PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related quantitative discipline
- Previous technical team leadership
- Exposure to Healthcare Domain
- Demonstrable experience in building end-to-end AI systems
- Academic or industry experience in one or more of the following: Deep Learning, sequential or time series modelling, Classical AI (search and planning), Speech AI, Natural Language Understanding, Image Processing, Reinforcement Learning, Bayesian Statistics, Causal Inference, Ethical AI
- Prior experience with Cloud AI APIs (GCP, Azure, AWS)
