The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at the Technical University of Denmark are doing exactly this by developing new technologies for engineering microbes, turning them into cell factories, which are designed for efficient production of a specific compound in a commercially competitive way. Today, many pharmaceuticals and chemicals are produced from oil or rare plant material. By using genome-scale modelling, advanced robotics and bioengineering, the Center’s researchers design and construct cell factories capable of converting low-value carbon sources to high-value chemical compounds and proteins in a more sustainable, cost-effective manner than today. In short: by using cell factories, we can go from an oil-based chemical industry to a highly sustainable bio-based industry.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled data scientist for The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain). This person will be part of the Data Science and Automation Unit of the Center and will work closely with both technical teams (software engineering, data management, other data scientists) and with application-oriented teams working on developing cell factories for sustainable production of chemicals and proteins. Our data scientists work with all types of biological data relevant to cell factory development including automated screening data, genomics and other omics data, and large-scale public domain datasets. Data scientists participate in building the overall software infrastructure for the Center through the development of automated data analysis pipelines, data visualizations and data dashboards. In addition, data scientists contribute to commercialization-oriented cell factory development projects at the Center through analysis and visualization of data collected in the projects as well as developing predictive models based on data.
