About DTU Biosustain

This vacancy is provided by Copenhagen Capacity.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at the Technical University of Denmark are doing exactly this by developing new technologies for engineering microbes, turning them into cell factories, which are designed for efficient production of a specific compound in a commercially competitive way. Today, many pharmaceuticals and chemicals are produced from oil or rare plant material. By using genome-scale modelling, advanced robotics and bioengineering, the Center’s researchers design and construct cell factories capable of converting low-value carbon sources to high-value chemical compounds and proteins in a more sustainable, cost-effective manner than today. In short: by using cell factories, we can go from an oil-based chemical industry to a highly sustainable bio-based industry.

Position

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled data scientist for The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain). This person will be part of the Data Science and Automation Unit of the Center and will work closely with both technical teams (software engineering, data management, other data scientists) and with application-oriented teams working on developing cell factories for sustainable production of chemicals and proteins. Our data scientists work with all types of biological data relevant to cell factory development including automated screening data, genomics and other omics data, and large-scale public domain datasets. Data scientists participate in building the overall software infrastructure for the Center through the development of automated data analysis pipelines, data visualizations and data dashboards. In addition, data scientists contribute to commercialization-oriented cell factory development projects at the Center through analysis and visualization of data collected in the projects as well as developing predictive models based on data.

Primary areas of responsibility

  • Participation in development of end-user oriented data analysis and visualization tools as part of a comprehensive software platform
  • Development and maintenance of standardized omics (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics) data analysis pipelines for DTU Biosustain data
  • Integration of publicly available data sources to in house data analysis workflows
  • Analysis and visualization of data collected in commercialization-oriented cell factory development projects
  • Development of predictive models of cell factory performance based on collected data
  • End-user training and consulting in data science at DTU Biosustain

Your qualification

  • Masters degree in computer science, data science, bioinformatics, applied statistics or similar discipline
  • Strong skills in data science including practical and theoretical knowledge of machine learning and distributed data management
  • Hands-on experience in data analysis and visualization using Python or similar language
  • Passion for both development of sustainable software solutions and application of these solutions to solve sustainability challenges
  • Experience in Agile software development and project management practices
  • Good understanding of data science tools for different applications such as Python/Pandas and TensorFlow
  • Experience or interest in biotechnology and bioinformatics
  • Strong communication skills in English
  • Ability to work as part of a team in different roles as well as independently as needed

What we offer

We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international atmosphere with the focus on research, teaching, innovation and scientific advice for the benefit of the surrounding community. We place emphasis on a high level of professionalism among our staff, so skills development is an integral part of our organization. We offer a great flexibility in the position. In the area of technical and natural sciences, DTU is one of the leading research and education institutions in Europe.

Furthermore we offer:

  • A meaningful project mission of making a step towards a green sustainable economy
  • A multidisciplinary team of biotechnologists, data scientists and software engineers
  • A budget for self-development activities, courses and conferences. We believe that learning is crucial for success and motivation
  • Horizontal team structure where everybody has a voice and can make impactful decisions
  • Social life; the Center is located on the campus of the Technical University of Denmark and has an in-house gym, a library, a brewing club and much more
