Position

You will be part of our London team - a product innovation group building the next generation of transport solutions for our customers.

We launched our Rides team two years ago with the goal of becoming the best way to get to and from the airport. We started offering airport transfers on booking.com while also building our direct business, rideways.com. We are now rapidly expanding Rides as well as building additional new transport products to get our customers from A to B in the best way possible.

We have set the team up as an internal start-up based in London. The team shares the upsides of being part of a bigger company - but with the speed, drive and autonomy of a fully independent, early-stage business. We are looking for a highly-motivated Software Engineering Lead to help build our next generation Transport Platform. You will be a central figure in designing, testing and developing a new Taxi Booking Platform from the ground up. You will be based in London, but with some travel to the head office in Manchester. You will also be working closely with our sister company Booking.com in Amsterdam.

Key Responsibilities

• Write high quality robust code including tests
• Strong sense of ownership for delivery
• Build, design and deliver high quality solutions in line with guidance and best practices
• Adhere to the defaults principles for Architecture, quality and non-functional requirements
• Collaborate with the team and others to deliver high quality solutions
• Design and develop reusable libraries, APIs and code that are easy to maintain, understand and re-use
• Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies and be able to apply these to your work
• Write, review and take responsibility for clear, concise and comprehensive technical documentation
• Supporting live products in a DevOps environment where required

• Strong focus on non-functional requirements at the beginning rather than an afterthought
• Decoupled service orientated architecture with resilience and adaptability built in

Your qualification

We are looking for a superb and enthusiastic Software Engineering Lead who will build our new mobility products. We expect you to have the energy and passion to deliver using a whole range of technologies and have a solid understanding of engineering principles. As a minimum, we expect all our Engineers to have:

• Solid Java development experience
• Service development, i.e. solid understanding of SOA, web Services and REST APIs
• A good understanding of how the web works starting at the request through to the response
• Integrating client code with REST based services
• Knowledge of design patterns (e.g. MVC, Facade)
• Knowledge of JavaScript and Java frameworks (e.g. Angular, Spring)
• An understanding of Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery and Agile
• An understanding of major browsers (including dev tools) and platforms (Linux, AWS)
• A good understanding of security principles
• A proficient in writing good quality object-oriented code using that is simple, fast under load and robust

Will be a plus

• Native iOS Development experience
• Good understanding of Asynchronous systems and messaging, for example, AWS SQS
• Commercial experience in an e-commerce background and A/B Testing
• Cloud technologies such as AWS and container technologies such as Docker
• Good understanding or knowledge of web service technologies such as Apache or Tomcat
