Kuehne + Nagel
Over our 125 year history, Kuehne + Nagel has evolved from a traditional international freight forwarder to a leading global provider of innovative and fully integrated supply chain solutions.
The global logistics network is our strongest asset. Dedication, integration and innovation are at the heart of our business philosophy. Focused on our customers’ needs we provide integrated logistics solutions of outstanding quality and operational excellence – we are the extension of your business.
Project goal
We are building a new single and global transport management system for road transportation called RoadLOG. RoadLOG is there not only to replace the variety of transport management systems that operate in the Kühne + Nagel overland business at the moment. The primary goal of the project is to introduce new standard processes that will improve operational productivity, visibility and help us becoming more profitable. With RoadLOG we target to become more digital and also much more automated. Our close collaboration with the business unit, who are experienced road logistics professionals and are responsible for the integration of the new processes, makes us confident in our success.
Project setup
RoadLOG is a big distributed agile project. We are 5 development teams (4 teams in Tallinn and 1 in Villefranche-sur-Saone, France). The teams are supported by technical architecture consultancy and Product Owner team in Hamburg. Each development team is specialized on its own functional and technical topics. A total of more than 60 people are working together hard to deliver RoadLOG.
The teams work in a Scrum fashion. Each of the synchronized 2-week iterations is followed by a common demonstration session and a planning of future work. Weekly estimation and refinement sessions help us to shape up the backlog. We continuously improve our processes. We put a lot of effort into a test automation to support our monthly release cycle. Besides the unit, service and integration tests that are implemented by developers, we are also developing an extensive UI-test suite, which covers the most important business processes of RoadLOG from end-user perspective. The development of the product has been going on for almost 3 years now. But there are still years of work in front of us. And, what is most important, we are live! Kühne + Nagel sites in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius are using RoadLOG as you read this job-ad with many more countries planned for the upcoming months.
Our technology
Our standalone rich-client is implemented using an in-house developed MVC framework based on Java Swing technology. We realize that the technology in use is not the most modern; therefore an evaluation of alternative UI solutions is going on as you read this. Our server is a spring-wired multi-layered application running on Tomcat.
Other than that:
Your challenges
In a big distributed project like RoadLOG, efficient communication is the key to success. You will have to mobilize all of your great communication skills while working with us. Our primary working language is English and you will learn a lot of different accents of it. Even though we aim to have development teams as independent as possible, there are still a lot of things the teams have to align on between each other. We share architectural principles, coding and design guidelines, processes and even the codebase. This means that there is a lot of communication going on to make it all work. And you have to like to talk about your ways of working, to share knowledge and to negotiate with various parties. Also from the technical point of view there are challenges to every taste. It’s really not only about form processing. For example, we are heavily integrated with all sorts of other systems within the Kühne+Nagel ecosystem. So, there are various challenges related to concurrent message and data processing. The more countries we will go live in, the more performance issues we will have to face. There will definitely be space for you to apply your technical skills in RoadLOG.
Having said all the above, here’s what we want you to do:
