While electronics remain a strength, the country is pushing boundaries in areas like AI research, cybersecurity, robotics, and fintech. The Japanese tech sector is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/business\/2024\/02\/06\/tech\/japan-tech-firms-labor-shortage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hiring international workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address the talent shortage. When surveyed, about a third of Japanese tech hiring managers mentioned that their biggest challenge was the shortage of skilled candidates. About half plan to increase their headcount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We spoke to Rupesh Agrawal, who found a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relocate.me\/search\/software-engineer\/japan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Software Engineer job in Japan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the help of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relocate.me\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relocate.me<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a job platform for techies looking to relocate. He told us first-hand what it is like to live and work in Tokyo and how to move to Japan from India. Was it by accident or were you actively seeking a Software Engineer job in Japan?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was looking for options outside India, primarily to gain international exposure to the IT industry. I had a friend working in Japan for some time who had great experiences to share \u2014 and that&#8217;s what pushed me to search for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relocate.me\/search\/software-engineer\/japan\/tokyo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">software engineering jobs in Tokyo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b><span style=\"color: #1071ff;\">You are now working at Mercari as a Backend Engineer. How many interview stages did you have to go through to get this job? How much time passed between the first interview and the job offer?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had the first interview in early December 2019 and got the offer for the position in February 2020. What was your recipe for success?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To land a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relocate.me\/company\/mercari\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developer job at Mercari<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should be comfortable coding on a shared platform, so brush up on this (as programming language probably doesn&#8217;t matter as much). Be open to new technologies and share interesting challenges (successes or failures). Microservices architecture experience is a big plus for Mercari.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: #1071ff;\">How to get a visa to work in Japan?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When applying for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relocate.me\/visas\/japan\/working-visa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese work visa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you will first need to obtain a <\/span><b>Certificate of Eligibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COE). To get a COE, your employer (in my case, it was Mercari) must submit an application on your behalf to the Immigration Bureau in the area where you will be working. This can take<\/span><b> up to three months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to process, so it is important to plan ahead of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the Certificate of Eligibility has been obtained, your employer must send the original to you so that you can apply for the work visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country. It then takes<\/span><b> approximately a week<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find out whether your work visa application was successful or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese work visas come in a variety of lengths, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 years<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duration of your employment contract is one of the key factors that determines the duration of the visa you will be issued. You can apply for an extension of your work visa before it expires, as long as the requirements are met.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find more detailed information about Japanese work visas on the website of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofa.go.jp\/j_info\/visit\/visa\/long\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Alternatively, check out this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relocate.me\/visas\/japan\/working-visa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy-to-read guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to apply for a Resident Registration in Japan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon moving to Japan, it is important to apply for a \u201cResident Registration\u201d at the government office nearest to the place of residence within 14 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: #1071ff;\">What kind\u00a0of relocation assistance did you get from your employer?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything was covered by Mercari, from the visa, flight tickets and initial accommodation to the shipping of my belongings. The company really helped me through all the moving process by taking special care to guide me and my family.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: #1071ff;\">How long did it take for you to actually move after accepting the job offer during the pandemic?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as I got the Certificate of Eligibility, it just so happened that international travels to Japan were banned and we could not fly to Tokyo. Due to the COVID situation, the plan was delayed but after around 6 months, I have been finally working at the company&#8217;s office located in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Roppongi,+Minato+City,+Tokyo+106-0032,+Japan\/@35.6628928,139.7248961,15z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x60188b9d3c1c9187:0x48f9c248e9169cfe!8m2!3d35.6618586!4d139.7345469?sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwju6-j_75TvAhWFr54KHay_D6IQ8gEwKXoECDMQAQ&amp;shorturl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roppongi district<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Tokyo. Are most rental properties furnished or unfurnished? Where did you search for apartments?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercari provides flat search assistance. In fact, I received support in all aspects of my transition, from getting a phone SIM card, resident card registration and opening a bank account to finding a flat to rent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, there are a good number of choices when it comes to renting flats. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toshihikoyamamoto.jp\/ur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UR properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a good option that can save on a lot of upfront costs, which are common in other types of flats in Japan. Most rental properties are unfurnished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ur-housing.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UR Housing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.remax.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RE\/MAX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are good websites to search for flats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A note regarding the costs of renting in Tokyo<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Rupesh mentioned, one of the main difficulties with renting in Tokyo is the cost. Initial renting costs are often around 5 or 6 times the monthly rent level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first cost is the <\/span><b>deposit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This will typically be 1\u20132 months of rent, which is standard in most countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the deposit is secured, then there are <\/span><b>agency fees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as <\/span><b>almost all properties for rent in Japan are only available through a realtor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Agency fees typically amount to somewhere between half a month&#8217;s rent, to one full month&#8217;s rent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of these, there are other costs, such as &#8216;<\/span><b>key fees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;. These fees were first implemented after bombings during the war, when the emperor at the time placed a cap on rent levels to ensure rental costs would not skyrocket due to the limited housing available. To counteract this, landlords began imposing &#8216;key fees&#8217; as a way for tenants to say &#8216;thank you&#8217; for being allowed to live there. Despite the rent cap being removed, this fee unfortunately remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the last big expenses when it comes to renting in Tokyo is <\/span><b>liability insurance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many agencies will try and oversell or overcharge liability insurance, so it is important to be aware of what should be paid beforehand. Typically, liability insurance should cost around \u00a54,000, or \u20ac25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a rental agreement has been secured, the main ongoing costs will typically be the liability insurance, monthly rent and a <\/span><b>maintenance fee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which is usually \u00a510,000, or \u20ac62).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there anything else you should know about finding housing in Japan?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YES! When renting a flat or buying a house, <\/span><b>Japan requires a guarantor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hosyo gaisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;. A guarantor, (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hoshonin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u4fdd\u8a3c in Japanese), is a Japanese citizen who acts as the co-signer. Alternatively, you can also use a guarantor company (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hoshonin-gaisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u4fdd\u8a3c\u4eba\u4f1a\u793e), instead of a personal guarantor. Your realtor may be able to recommend one for you to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid the need to find a guarantor and reduce moving fees, you can live in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.gaijinpot.com\/housing-japan-apartment-share-house\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared house<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u30b7\u30a7\u30a2\u30cf\u30a6\u30b9). Despite being a small nation, this island has the luxury of a climate that allows residents and tourists to experience tropical summers and arctic winters. While this will vary depending on where you live, each season has its own distinct traits throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Tokyo, spring and fall are milder in temperature, typically falling in the mid to high 70 \u00b0F\/20 \u00b0C. Summer in Tokyo is known for being humid, with hot temperatures and sudden rainfall. Tokyo is lucky during winter, with the weather remaining far milder than cities further north. That being said, the capital still experiences plenty of snowfall and low temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b><span style=\"color: #1071ff;\">By the way, are you learning Japanese? While some hospitals offer English services, availability can vary.
